It created a predictable amount of hubbub on the intertubes and didn't seem to warrant a post from me, so I Facebooked it, whereupon a debate broke out. The issue is nicely summed up by a slugline to the Slate piece is "the craft beer industry’s love affair with hops is alienating people who don’t like bitter brews." Well, is it?

At some point this year, a person who claims to love beer is going to say that Oliver isn't a craft brewer because of a stance his company took on excise taxes. If that happens in your presence, pull the beer out of that person's hand and pour it over his or her swollen head. They don't deserve it.  less

It was passed by the State House and Senate in less than a month.

  Hoppy beer is awful—or at least, its bitterness is ruining craft beer’s reputation

  As a beer writer, I often find myself preaching the word about craft beer to people who dont want to hear it. There are a lot of Bud Light fans and people whod rather sip a zinfandel, even in the craft beer capital of the world, Portland, Ore., where I live.

His celebration of Chicago Craft Beer Week, kicking off Thursday, is tempered by the fact that in order to comply with current state law, he must sell either Revolution's production facility or its brewpub. Revolution started in 2010 as a brewpub in Logan Square and its beers became so popular that Mr. Deth opened a brewery in Avondale two years later. In order to be able to own both a brewery and a brewpub, Mr. Deth had to get a craft brewer's license with the state. The only catch is that holders of craft brewers' licenses cannot produce more than 15,000 barrels a year.  less
