Southern Tier "Oat"
Southern Tier Brewing Company - Lakewood, New York USA
Imperial stout (ABV 10.8%)

[Suggested Glassware: Snifter]

Rating: 3.95/5.0

Aroma: 8/10
Appearance: 3/5
Taste: 8/10
Palate: 4/5
Overall: 16/20

The pour was a pitch jet black with an average (1-2 finger) cocoa brown fizzy head that diminished quickly, down to a wispy residue and small collar with fair runny lacing.

The aroma was of a roasted biscuit malt, light resin hops and a leathery doughy yeast with notes of milk chocolate, oats, roasted coffee, molasses, vanilla and a light dark fruit presence (raisons & plums).

The taste was lightly sweet and very roasty with a good malt backbone and had hints of oats, chocolate and a mild fruity presence at first, and then became smooth and creamy with a bold coffee presence, a mild oat lactose flavor and a light boozy feel towards the finish. The flavor lasted a nice long time following the swallow, with a roasty alcohol warming sensation left to linger on for a while longer.

Mouthfeel was just past halfway between medium and full in body with a mildly dry texture and a carbonation that had an intensity that was just past medium.

Overall this was a very good and roasty brew with a bold mocha coffee taste along with a creamy oat flavor that when blended together it created a beer with a nice smooth drinkability, which did a superb job of concealing the exceptionally high ABV. In one word YUM…
