Big props to Ken for sending me this Winter 11-12 Black Chocolate Stout from Brooklyn Brewery in Brooklyn, New York. The Black Chocolate Stout pours out pitch black in color, is opaque and topped with a large, deep tan colored head that very slowly recedes to about a quarter inch film. On the nose, aromas of heavily roasted grains, some sweet coffee and baking chocolate. In the mouth, this is big and rich. Heavily roasted, almost charred flavors, packed with chocolate flavor and a treacle like, burnt toffee sweetness. Hints of coffee and a mild, spicy hop bite. Definitely full bodied. Relatively low carbonation. Beautiful lacing on the glass. Slightly viscous, syrupy mouthfeel. The long finish is slightly bitter and slightly sweet.
A big beer and if a beer is a meal in a glass the Black Chocolate Stout is dessert in a glass. This should age well and may in fact be better a year or two down the road.
12 ounce bottle, 10.0% ABV
