Founders KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout)

  • A big thanks to Mike for sending me this bottle of Kentucky Breakfast Stout from Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. KBS pours out pitch black in color with no light getting through and is topped with a tightly knit, two finger, mocha colored head that slowly reduces down to a film with a nice collar. On the nose, all the usual suspects are present in abundance; bourbon, vanilla, coffee, molasses and dark chocolate. In the mouth, this is sheer heaven. Very flavorful but the first thing you notice is the creaminess. It feels luxurious in your mouth and then you palate fires off flavor upon flavor. The bourbon flavor is potent but it is not harsh. The coffee and chocolate though bitter are tinged with a touch of vanilla sweetness. What wonderful balance.

Full bodied. Moderate carbontion. Creamy mouthfeel. Sheets of lacing on the glass. The finish is long and slightly dry towards the end.

There are a lot of barrel aged stouts on the market and there seem to be more each day. Some are really good but, with experience comes knowledge and this is where Founders shines. The balance in this brew is perfect. It has all the aspects you expect but none are harsh. They meld together in a symphony of flavor. Truly a delight to drink and highly recommended.

    12 ounce bottle, 11.2% ABV, 70 IBU, Bottled 03/17/12

    Beer 90 of 366 for 2012
