Russian River Consecration Sour Dark Ale

  • The Consecration Sour Dark Ale (Batch 006) from Russian River Brewing Company in Sonoma, California is aged in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels with currants, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. The craft beer is a tawny, brownish red in color with some cloud and is topped with a one finger, off-white head that reduces down fairly quickly. On the nose, a good bit of earthy funk, cabernet, vanilla and sour cherry. In the mouth, vanilla, cabernet, cherry and, very briefly, a touch sweet that becomes sour, then very sour. Almost makes your mouth pucker but not quite. Medium bodied. Low carbonation. Clean Mouthfeel. Little lacing on the glass. The finish is elongated and very dry with layers of sour flavor along with toasted, oaky vanilla from the barrel.

An exceptional sour ale with complex flavor that pushes your palate to new extremes but does not take you over the top. As you sip this beer you'll find yourself holding each sip longer and longer in your mouth as the sourness is addictive to the palate. Really, can't say enough good about this Russian River Consecration. If you like sour ales and have not tried it this needs to go on your "must find" list. Highly recommended.
