A big thank you to Ken for sending me this bottle of Tocobaga Red Ale from Cigar City Brewing Company in Tampa, Florida. The Tocobaga Red Ale pours out a cloudy, reddish brown in color and is topped with a dense, one finger, off-white head that slowly recedes to a thin film with a quarter inch collar. On the nose, citrus hops, caramel, a little bread and some flower. In the mouth, citrus hops up front with a layer of caramel sweetness and some woody flavors that lend some spice and earth to the beer. As this warms up in the glass the sweetness becomes more pronounced in both the aroma and flavor. Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Slight oil to the mouthfeel. Sheets of lacing on the glass. Nice length on the finish which is somewhat juicy and slightly bitter.
An American Red Ale with its hoppy side fully exposed as it shows off layer upon layer of flavor. Nice complexity. Recommended.
