Thanks to Ken for sending me this can of Vortex IPA from Fort George Brewery & Public House in Astoria, Oregon. The Vortex IPA pours out orange in color with a good amount of cloud and is topped with a large, off-white, foamy head that slowly reduces down to a thick film. On the nose, a good amount of caramel sweetness with matching pine, resin and grapefruit rind bitterness. In the mouth, a light caramel like sweetness at first that becomes matched with resiny, hoppy bitterness then is left behind as the bitter hops take over. Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Thick splotches of lacing on the glass. Slight oil to the mouthfeel. The finish is long with a coating bitterness shining all the way to the end.
A solid IPA with good flavor and a nice balance. Persistent hop bitterness eventually wins out, as it should in an American IPA, making this a go to IPA. Recommended.
