I've been wanting to try this IPA for a long time. A huge thanks to Ken for sending me a bottle. The Jai Alai IPA from Cigar City Brewing Company in Tampa, Florida pours out a burnt orange in color with some cloud and is topped with a two finger, off-white head that very slowly reduces down to a fairly thick film with a nice collar. On the nose, big pine and citrus hops with just a hint of malty sweetness. Very inviting. In the mouth, a lot more balanced than the nose let on. Nice caramel and biscuit at first followed by a big dose of hoppy bitterness. Pine, grapefruit rind and leafy, earthy hops shine through. Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Slick mouthfeel. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. The finish is long with a nice hop bitterness and a burst of spice towards the end.
A really, really good IPA with great hop flavor. Enough balance to please the mouth as well as enough hop bitterness to make a hophead seek this craft beer out. Highly recommended.
