The Tropic King Imperial Saison Ale from Funkwerks in Fort Collins, Colorado pours out golden burnt orange in color with good clarity and is topped with a huge foamy, white-off-white head that lasts for a very long time before reducing to a thick film with a quarter inch plus collar. On the nose, floral and fruity with a good dose of pepper, coriander and some yeast. In the mouth, tropical fruit, earthy funk with a dollop of peppery, ginger spice. Tart and bitter. Medium bodied. Well carbonated, almost prickly. Sticky lacing on the glass. Slight creaminess to the mouthfeel. Dry and tart on a good length finish that ends with the spice dominating.
An exceptional imperial saison. Good flavor and very refreshing. Out of the fridge the aroma is the star but as this craft beer warms up a little the flavor comes alive to match the aroma. Highly recommended.
