The Chatoe Rogue First Growth OREgasmic Ale from Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon pours out deep amber in color with a good bit of cloud and is topped with a two finger, cream colored, tightly knit head that hangs around for a while before very slowly receding down to a film. On the nose, aromas of earth, pine, caramel and some floral aspects. In the mouth, bold hop bitterness with a decent malt backbone lending some balance. Flavors of pine, citrus rind, dried apricot and hints of caramel hiding in the background with a little fresh baked bread. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Beautiful, sticky sheets of lacing on the glass. The mouthfeel is quite clean with just a touch of oil. Long finish with solid flavors and constant bitterness.
This might be classified as an American Pale Ale but it is an amped up version of one. Wonderful flavor and hop bitterness with almost a raw edge to them. Recommended.
