The Lucky 13.alt Ale from Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, California pours out a clear, bright copper in color and is topped with a two finger, off-white, dense head that very slowly reduces down to a thick film. On the nose, big hops but there is a good deal of sweetness backing them up. Aromas of pine, grapefruit rind, caramel and some flower. In the mouth, like the nose, a ton of hops but there is balance. Flavors of grapefruit juice, orange rind, pine and enough caramel like sweetness to stand up to all that hoppy bitterness. Medium bodied. Fine carbonation. Slight oil to the mouthfeel. Thick sheets of sticky lacing on the glass. Long, juicy finish with good hop bitterness.
A solid ale with wonderful flavor and a good amount of malt to back up the hoppy exuberance. If you're like me and love a hoppy craft beer, this is one to buy and thoroughly enjoy. Recommended.
