The 1554 Enlightened Black Ale from New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, Colorado pours out a dark cola brown in color with some light getting through revealing golden amber highlights and is topped with a one finger, foamy, mocha colored head that reduces down to a thin film at an expercted pace. On the nose, rich and malty with aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark fruit, toffee and a little nut. In the mouth, balanced with flavors of roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, sweet dark fruit, a little spice, hop bitterness and a touch of cream. Medium bodied. Fine carbonation. Sheets of lacing on the glass. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Long finish that becomes dry and a little bitter towards the end.
A really good dark ale with good flavor. Very drinkable and balanced. Good for a cool Summer night, Fall afternoon or watching the snow fall outside while you sit by the fireplace on a Winter day. Recommended.
