The 1000 IBU American Style Imperial IPA from Mikkeller is brewed & bottled at De Proef Brouwerij in Lochristi-Hijtfe, Belgium. The 1000 IBU pours out a reddish brown in color with a good amount of cloud and just a little light getting through. The head is khaki in color, dense and very slowly recedes to a thin film. On the nose, huge hops. Aromas of resinous pine, citrus rind, grapefruit and just the slightest toffee sweetness. In the mouth, beautiful hoppy bitterness from beginning to end with a decent malt backing. Flavors of pine tar, pine, resin, grapefruit rind and light toffee. Medium bodied. Fine, prickly carbonation. Solid lacing on the glass. Lovely oily mouthfeel that is very chewy. The finish is long and, as you might expect, incredibly wonderful in its profound bitterness.
1000 IBUs? Sounds nuts right? I'm sure some people will walk away from this beer thinking it is too much but if you're adventurous enough to give it a try I think you'll really like it. Wonderfully bitter in every aspect but also quite drinkable with a well hidden 9.6% ABV. Recommended.
