The Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale from Stone Brewing Company in Escondido, California pours out a deep amber in color with good clarity and is topped with a two finger, tan head that slowly reduces to a thin film with a nice sized collar. On the nose, hoppy and malty. Aromas of toffee, citrus rind, pine, wild flower and wood. In the mouth, somewhat sweet at first until the hops take over. Flavors of pine, citrus rind, toffee, vanilla, some spice and a little earth. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Slick mouthfeel. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. The finish is long as layers of flavor cascade away with bitter hops and a dose of spice outlasting the others.
A really good craft beer. Arrogant Bastard Ale is wonderful and this Oaked version adds another dimension and layer of flavor. Be prepared for a good dose of hops as this beer does not fail in delivering the typical Stone bitterness. Highly recommended.
