The Double Black Diamond Series Signal de Botrange Farmhouse Ale Aged in Chardonnay Wine Barrels (the first craft beer in the Double Black Diamond Series) from Elevation Beer Company in Poncha Springs, Colorado pours out a murky, burnt orange and is topped with a one finger, off-white colored head that reduces down to a thin film with a nice collar. On the nose, funky and yeasty with an underlying, yet distinct sweetness and quite vinous. Aromas of white wine, oak, vanilla, caramel, grape and a touch of funk. In the mouth, tons of wine qualities with extended flavor and a dose of funk. Flavors of tropical fruit, grape, caramel, apple, vanilla, toasted oak, funk and a little vinous alcohol warmth. Light bodied. Fine carbonation. Little lacing on the glass. Clean mouthfeel. The finish is long with the wine hanging out almost to the end where a dose of spice kicks in.
An absolutely wonderful farmhouse ale. Layers of flavor with a dollop of wine. Almost like a fine champagne with added flavor from the malts used. Probably the most chardonnay-esque brew I've had as the amount of chardonnay like flavors from the barrel have really elevated this craft beer. Elevation Beer Company continues to impress and Signal de Botrange is a must drink craft beer. Highly recommended.
