The Ø For Awesome Imperial Amber Ale, a collaboration craft beer from Renaissance Brewing Company (Marlborough, New Zealand), 8 Wired Brewing Company (Blenheim, New Zealand) and Nøgne Ø (Grimstad, Norway), is a based on a 3-way blend of 8 Wired's Hopwired IPA, Renaissance Brewing's Stonecutter Scotch Ale & Nøgne Ø's Batch #100 Barley Wine Ale. This was brewed at 8 Wired's brewery.
Ø For Awesome pours out a cola brown in color with just a little light getting through showing off some deep amber hues and is topped with a one finger, tightly knit, tan head that slowly reduces down to a thin film. On the nose, a lot of malty goodness and a lot of hoppy aromas. I want to say they balance each other out but they act as separate entities each permeating the nose. Aromas of orange peel, nut, roast grain, pine, toffee and peat. In the mouth, solid malt at first with hop flavor picking up towards the end where the bitterness comes through most. Flavors of roast grain, a hint of chocolate, treacle, citrus, pine, tropical fruit and a bit of earth.
Medium to full bodied. Vibrant carbonation. Slick almost syrupy mouthfeel. Splotches of sticky lacing on the glass. The finish is long and somewhat dry with the hop bitterness poking through as more and more of the malty sweetness fades away.
A very interesting brew that is not designed by style but by the creativity of the brewers involved. It worked; it really worked. A ton of flavor and layer upon layer of complexity really make you think about this craft beer as you drink it. Well done. Highly recommended.
Best when you let it warm up for about fifteen minutes in the glass after taking the bottle from the fridge.
