The Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale from Stone Brewing Company in Escondido, California pours out jet black in color with some deep ruby hues when held up to the light and is topped with a voluminous, foamy, tan head that slowly reduces to a rocky film and a quarter inch collar. On the nose, holy hops batman! Aromas of pine, resin, citrus rind, fresh grapefruit juice with some molasses sweetness and deeply roast grain. In the mouth, juicy, deeply roast and hoppy - perfect for a Black IPA. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, grapefruit juice, pine, earth, roast grains and molasses. Seems confusing but it is not; the layers really work well together. Medium bodied. Low side of moderate carbonation. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. Chewy, oily mouthfeel. The finish is long and on the dry side with the deeply roast and bitter hoppy flavors lasting to the end.
A really, really good Black IPA (India-Style Black Ale, Cascadian Dark Ale or whatever you wish to call this style of beer). The flavors are potent but not overwhelming. The complexity is immense but the craft beer remains very drinkable. Stone has made another fantastic craft beer. Highly recommended.
