The Hop Head Red Red IPA from Green Flash Brewing Company in San Diego, California pours out amber in color with reddish-brown hues, a good deal of cloud and is topped with just over a finger of tan, dense head that reduces down to a thin film with a small collar. On the nose, quite malty with underlying hops. Not what I was expecting but this was bottled on 06/15/12 so the hops might be fading. Aromas of toffee, pine, biscuit and a little earthiness. In the mouth, more hoppiness but this still has a good dose of malt in the flavor profile. Flavors of toffee, citrus rind, pine, earth and a little spice. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Nice sheets of lacing on the glass. Slight chew and oil to the mouthfeel. The finish is long and juicy and has good bitterness outlasting the malt sweetness.
This, even though that I would consider it past its freshness date, is still a good craft beer. A notable sign that, if fresh, I can only imagine how good this is. I'll have to keep an eye out for a fresher bottle to compare this too, but even so, I have no problem recommending this craft beer.
