The Split Shot Espresso Milk Stout from Elysian Brewing Company in Seattle, Washington pours out jet black in color with no light getting through and is topped with a two finger, tan head that reduces down quite quickly to a thin film with a small collar. On the nose, lovely roast grain and coffee aromas permeate the nose. Aromas of deeply roast coffee beans, bittersweet chocolate, roast grain and a hint of molasses. In the mouth, smooth and creamy with deeply roast flavors coating the mouth. Flavors of coffee, chocolate, molasses, milk and a hint of vanilla. Full side of medium bodied. Low to moderate carbonation. Sheets of lacing on the glass. Definite cream from the lactose in the mouthfeel. The finish is long and the coffee flavors intensify towards the end as the other layers of flavor fall away.
The Official Beer of Seattle Beer Week 2012 and deservedly so. Great flavor and well put together. If you love your coffee and your stout give this craft brew a try. You will like it. Recommended.
PS - Dear Elysian, a barrel aged version of this would rock!
