Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout Review

  • The Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout from Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado pours out pitch black, much like the oil coming out of your car when you change the oil after your kid put fifty thousand miles on it between oil changes. Slightly viscous with no light getting through and topped with a three plus finger, dark tan, dense head that takes forever to reduce down to a thick film with a good sized collar. On the nose, imagine a vanilla coffee made from deeply roast, french roast coffee beans mixed with unsweetened chocolate and a dash of molasses. In the mouth, the roast flavors are viciously deep, bitter and almost overwhelming. Coffee, vanilla and bitter chocolate also mingle there way through your mouth with a hint of spice and a slight earthiness. A big, full bodied beer. Moderate carbonation. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. Chewy, somewhat viscous mouthfeel. The finish is very long and a little disjointed with layers of flavor peeling away leaving the roast, earthy bitterness lingering.

     

    This is a big, big beer. The roast flavors, right now, are a little too much. In a few months, when the flavors mellow and meld a bit more this is going to be one of the best stouts out there. A definite buy, but one to put in the cellar for six moths, two years or longer to allow it to age and come into its own. Highly recommended.
