Rogue Ales Double Chocolate Stout Review

  • The Double Chocolate Stout from Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon pours out pitch black in color with no light getting through and is topped with a large (three plus fingers) mocha colored, evenly bubbled, dense head that very slowly reduces down to a thick film with a large collar. On the nose, this smells divine. Like a bittersweet chocolate dessert in a glass. Aromas of sweet cocoa powder, bittersweet chocolate, deeply roasted grain, powdered milk and peaty earth. In the mouth, rich and complex with deep layers of flavor. Flavors of bittersweet chocolate, deeply roast grain, cocoa, hot chocolate, earth and a dash of cream. Full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Sheets of lacing on the glass. Somewhat creamy and chewy in the mouthfeel. The finish does not want to stop as the different layers of chocolate keep clinging on.

What an exceptional Imperial Chocolate Stout. The layers of chocolate upon chocolate ranging from bittersweet to cocoa powder to hot chocolate are amazing. Truly complex but not in a way that confuses you. More like in a way that you wish other craft beers could be. A delight to have been able to enjoy. Highly recommended.
