Shmaltz He'Brew Funky Jewbelation Ale Review

  • The He'Brew Funky Jewbelation Ale, a blend of six ales aged in rye whiskey and bourbon barrels, from Shmaltz Brewing Company in Saratoga Springs, New York pours out coal black with no light getting through and is topped with a two finger, mocha colored, dense head that slowly reduces down to a film with a quarter inch collar. Quite complex on the nose with aromas of dark fruit, roast grain, vanilla, toffee sweetness and some earth. In the mouth, sweet and tart with a lot of fruit. Flavors of date, fig, cherry, vanilla, toffee, roast grain and oak. Full side of medium bodied. Fine carbonation. Sheets of lacing on the glass. Slight syrup and chew to the mouthfeel. The finish is very long and really dries out towards the end as the sour flavors outlast the sweet.

A very complex well put together ale. I was surprised that there were nearly no noticeable bourbon or whiskey flavors imparted by the barrel but you do get vanilla and oak. A very intriguing ale that really piques the palate. Highly recommended.
