The Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale from Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon pours out a clear copper in color and is topped with a two finger, off-white, foamy head that slowly reduces down to a thin film with a partial collar. On the nose, this smells like a breakfast plate with crispy bacon, waffles and maple syrup. There is also a good deal of smoke in the aroma. In the mouth, definitely pushing the limits of what to expect in a beer. Flavors of smoke, maple syrup, roast meat, wood and a little herb. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. The mouthfeel is fairly thin. Some lacing on the glass. The finish lasts and dries out towards the end with the meatiness almost lasting as long as the smoke.
An intriguing craft beer. I do not think their will be much middle ground on whether you like this or not. You are either all in or all out. If smokey beers are your thing give it a try but expect a fair amount of smoke. The sweetness is there but it is upfront and fades leaving the meat and smoke to linger on the palate. Not for everyone but grab a few friends and try it together and see what you think.
This might be interesting to mix fifty-fifty with Rogue's Double Chocolate Stout.
