Bear Republic Racer X Double IPA Review

  • The Racer X Double IPA from Bear Republic Brewing Company in Healdsburg, California pours out an orangey copper in color with good clarity and is topped with an off-white, two finger, foamy head that slowly reduces down to a thick film with a large collar. Big hops on the nose. Aromas of pine, citrus rind, caramel and a little mango. In the mouth, the hops are assertive, overriding but not overwhelming a lot of the sweetness from the malt. Flavors of orange rind, mango, pine, some herb, a little peppery spice, caramel and toffee. Medium bodied. Fine carbonation. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. Some definite weight in the slightly slick mouthfeel. Quite dry on a long finish with the bitterness carrying through right to the end.

I've been a fan of Racer 5 for a long time and its big brother, Racer X, is exceptional too. The flavor is incredible with enough malt to make a none IPA drinker happy while also having a tremendous amount of hops to please the hop head. Really, this is a great beer. Highly recommended.
