Kona Brewing Aloha Series Pipeline Porter Review

  • The Limited Release Aloha Series Pipeline Porter from Kona Brewing Company in Kona, Hawaii (although I believe this was brewed and bottled in Oregon) pours out a very dark cola brown in color with some light getting through on the edges and is topped with a two finger, mocha colored, frothy head that reduces all the way down leaving just a few foamy patches and a nice collar. On the nose, rich and robust with coffee, roast grain, earth and dark chocolate aromas. In the mouth, the Kona coffee flavor dominates but is not overburdening as while the flavor is solid it is not acrid. Bruleéd sugar, some bittersweet chocolate and roast malt flavors play a secondary role. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Some lacing on the glass. Nice weight and a little cream to the mouthfeel. The finish is long and the coffee flavor shines right to the end.

A well made coffee porter that gets the added coffee right. The coffee flavors are intense and do dominate but they are not bitter. They're fully integrated. Recommended.
