Santa Fe Brewing Kickin Chicken Bourbon Barrel Aged Barley Wine

  • The Kickin Chicken Bourbon Barrel Aged Barley Wine Ale (Chicken Killer Barley Wine aged in Wild Turkey 101 bourbon barrels for nine months) from Santa Fe Brewing Company in Santa Fe, New Mexico pours out a cloudy, deep caramel brownin color and is topped with a one finger, off-white head that reduces down to a thin film with a small collar. On the nose, big bourbon aromas dominate with vanilla, oak, grape, raisin and caramel in the background. In the mouth, good bourbon that is sweet before a distinct sourness takes over the brew. Flavors of bourbon, vanilla, oak, sour grape, toffee, dark fruit and a little earth. Medium bodied. Some lacing on the glass. Well carbonated. Slight creaminess to the mouthfeel. The finish is long and the bourbon flavor carries through right to the end riding along on a slightly sour wave.

A really good barrel aged barley wine. Nice flavors and not too big nor too sweet. Perfect for the bourbon lover that likes a good beer and the craft beer connoisseur that likes a barrel aged brew. Recommended.
