Alaskan Brewing Co. 2012 Smoked Porter Review

  • The 2012 Smoked Porter from Alaskan Brewing Company in Juneau, Alaska pours out pitch black in color with just the tiniest bit of light making it through on the very edges and is topped with a two finger mocha colored head that slowly reduces down to a thin film with a good sized collar. On the nose, very rich roast aromas with chocolate, a hint of coffee, burnt sugar and a dose of smoke. In the mouth, quite thick with layers of complexity. Flavors of roast grain and bittersweet chocolate at first that are followed with a good amount of smoke, coffee, some light spice and a slightly earthy hop bite. Full side of medium bodied. Low to moderate carbonation. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. Slightly viscous mouthfeel that is quite chewy and a little creamy. The finish is long with good roast flavor and smoke holding on right to the end.

A really good porter that makes this time of year well worth looking forward to. The flavors are well integrated and the smoke, while there, is subtle enough that most people will enjoy it. Do yourself a favor and buy at least one bottle of Alaskan Smoked Porter. Highly recommended.
