The Smoked Porter from Stone Brewing Company in Escondido, California pours out a very dark brown, almost black, in color with a little light getting through showing off some ruby hues. The head is two fingers tall, finely bubbled and slowly reduces down to a creamy film with a good sized collar. On the nose, a good dose of burnt sugar with smoke, coffee and dark chocolate. In the mouth, rich and creamy with good balance. Flavors of roast grain, molasses, bittersweet chocolate, coffee, light cream, smoke, charcoal and a little bit of a hop bite. Full side of medium bodied. Fine carbonation. Thick, almost solid sheets of lacing on the glass. Creamy, slightly sticky mouthfeel. The finish is long and the roast grain and smoke hand out right to the end as the other flavors fall away.
A very good porter that has a mild smokiness to it. Good flavor, quite complex and well balanced. A porter I think everyone could enjoy and priced well. Recommended.
