Elysian Brewing Manic IPA Series Valhalla Red IPA Review

  • The Manic IPA Series Valhalla Red IPA from Elysian Brewing Company in Seattle, Washington pours out a slightly hazy copper in color and is topped with a two finger, fluffy, white head that slowly reduces down to a thick film with a good-sized collar. On the nose, hops, hops and more hops. Aromas of citrus rind, pine, flower and light biscuit. In the mouth, pushing towards a Double IPA in terms of persistent, delightful, bitter hoppiness. Flavors of pine, grapefruit rind, bitter lemon, mango and a little toffee. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. The mouthfeel is pretty clean with just a little oiliness. The finish is long and slightly dry with the bitter hops going nowhere.

A wonderfully, persistently bitter IPA that is more bitter than a lot of Double IPAs I've had. Elysian must have gone fairly heavy with the Sorachi Ace & Citra hops in this brew and it shows. Much to my delight! If you like your IPAs on the bitter side, à la PNW style, this is a must find for you. Highly recommended.
