Santa Fe Brewing Co. Black IPA Review

  • The Black IPA from Santa Fe Brewing Company in Santa Fe, New Mexico pours out black in color with a little light getting through on the edges showing off mahogany hues and is topped with a two finger, tan colored, foamy head that slowly reduces down to a thick film with a good sized collar. On the nose, a lovely complexity of citrus, pine, roast grain, earth and molasses. In the mouth, incredible balance with a good hop bite and malty sweetness mingling. Flavors of roast grain, toffee, molasses, cocoa, pine, citrus and a little char. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Sheets of lacing on the glass. Slight oil to the mouthfeel. The finish is long with the hop bitterness and malt sweetness riding right to the end.

A very good Black IPA with wonderful balance. This, to me, seems like the perfect marriage of hoppy bitterness and roast dark beer flavors. Very easy to drink with flavors that urge you to take another sip. I will be back at the store to buy more of this Black IPA. Recommended.
