The Elevated Series Copper Cone Pale Ale from Epic Brewing Company in Salt Lake City, Utah pours out a cloudy, coppery, burnt orange in color and is topped with a two finger, off-white, dense head that slowly reduces down to a thick film with a slightly taller collar. On the nose, rich and malty with a solid dose of hops in the background. Aromas of bitter orange marmalade, citrus rind, toffee, caramel, biscuit and a little grass. In the mouth, very smooth with layer upon layer of flavor cascading across the tongue. Flavors of orange rind, grapefruit, a nice dose of bruléed sugar, some earth and a little pine. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Slight syrup to the mouthfeel. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. The finish is incredibly long with the hoppy notes outlasting the sweetness.
An incredible pale ale but it gets better. This is Release #14 and according to Epic Brewing's website this was brewed on May 11, 2011. Yes, 2011! 18 months ago. Could the bottle be incorrectly labeled? I do not think so but Epic's website says this is 6.0% ABV and the bottle says, "Release #14 7.0% ALC/VOL" so there is a discrepancy somewhere. Probably a typo on the website. Nevertheless, this is one fantastic pale ale that is just packed with flavor and wonderfully hoppy. No wonder this scores in the 99th percentile for pale ales on Rate Beer. Highly recommended.
