Clown Shoes Vampire Slayer American Imperial Stout Review

  • The Second Anniversary Ale Vampire Slayer American Imperial Stout from Clown Shoes Beer (brewed by Ipswich Brewing Company) in Ipswich, Massachusetts pours out pitch black in color with no light getting through and is topped with two fingers of finely bubble, mocha colored head that slowly reduces down to a thin film with a quarter inch collar. On the nose, this smells big, like an amped up stout. Aromas of dark chocolate, roasted grain, dark treacle, molasses, a little coffee and some dark, dried fruit. In the mouth, this is quite heavy with a nice viscosity. Flavors of roast grain, dark chocolate, molasses, french roast coffee, a hint of licorice and a touch of smoke. Full bodied. Fine carbonation. Thin sheets of lacing on the glass. Thick, chewy mouthfeel. The finish is incredibly long, somewhat dry and packed with flavor. The roast grains and chocolate flavors ride almost right to the end where the molasses like sweetness is left alone.

A wonderful imperial stout. The flavor is full on with no one flavor over powering the others. Balanced, complex and simply delicious. An excellent beer to sip by the fire at night after skiing all day. Sign me up for some more. Highly recommended.
