The Old Viscosity Ale from Port Brewing Co. in San Marcos, California pours out pitch black in color with no light getting through and is topped with a large, foamy, deep tan colored head that slowly recedes down to a thin film with a large collar. On the nose, this is big and roasty. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, a little oak and some dark fruit. In the mouth, deeply roasted with a myriad of flavors. Coffee, chocolate, light anise, oak, some vanilla, charred grain and molasses. Full bodied. Good carbonation. Slightly chewy mouthfeel. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. The finish is long with the roasted grain and coffee flavors outlasting the others.
A solid dark, roasty ale with a vivid complexity of flavor. Definitely "Not Your Dad's 30W!" but it sure has that dark color and is fairly viscous. A wonderful brew that I am sure any dark craft beer drinker will really like. Highly recommended.
