The Hop Rod Rye Specialty Ale from Bear Republic Brewing Company in Healdsburg, California pours out a rich amber in color with good clarity and is topped with a large, two finger plus, tightly knit, light tan head that very slowly reduces down to a thick film with a large collar. On the nose, good balance of hop and malt with a little spiciness. Aromas of pine, grapefruit, wild flower, toffee, pepper and a little earthiness. In the mouth, very smooth with good weight and complexity. Flavors of pine, citrus, pepper, some fruit, a hint of booze and a dollop of caramel. Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass that almost join to form a solid sheet of lacing from top to bottom. Slick mouthfeel. The finish is long and while the underlying sweetness tries to persist to the end it is outlived by the hoppy bitterness.
A very good craft beer with enough malt to please a malthead and more than enough hops to please a hophead. Slightly hop leaning overall and a delight to taste with every sip. Recommended.
