Lagunitas Sucks Brown Shugga' Substitute Ale

  • The Sucks Brown Shugga' Substitute Ale from Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, California pours out a golden-orange in color with a little cold haze and is topped with a two-finger, white head that has good retention, eventually receding to a fairly thick film with a nice collar. On the nose, hoppy citrus aromas of tangerine, grapefruit, some pineapple and a little caramel sweetness. In the mouth, nice hop bitterness that is quite sharp. Flavors of bitter orange, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, pine and a dose of caramel to add a little balance. Medium bodied. Good carbonation with a slight prickle. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. Slick, oily mouthfeel. The finish is long and hoppy with nice bitterness right to the end.

A solid IPA with wonderful citrus, hoppy bitterness that leaves you wishing you had more as you stare into the bottom of your empty glass. Originally made as a substitute beer when the brewery did not have time to brew their Brown Shugga' Ale, Sucks, as it is most commonly known, will soon be a year round brew and a welcomed addition to the Lagunitas line-up. Highly recommended.
