The Barrel Reserve 2013 Dark Ale Aged in Whiskey Barrels from River North Brewery in Denver, Colorado pours out cola brown in color with some cloud and is topped by a one finger light tan head that reduces all the way down leaving just a small collar. On the nose, warm and rich with redolent bourbon aromas, bread, toffee and a little fruit. In the mouth, very smooth and well rounded. Flavors of bourbon, raisin, toffee, yeast, vanilla, apple and a hint of warming booze. Medium to full bodied. Fine carbonation. Sheets of lacing on the glass. Coating mouthfeel. The finish is long and the sweet malts hang on for a good while only to be outlasted by the bourbon notes.
A very unique craft beer being a blend of the barrel aged craft beers River North has brewed. Sometimes throwing everything in the batch can work and it does here. This is a complex craft beer with a multitude of layers working in harmony while at the same time being very drinkable. Highly recommended.
