The Dark Seas Russian Imperial Stout from Mission Brewery in San Diego, California pours out pitch black in color with no light getting through and is topped with a dense, small bubbled, three finger, mocha colored head that slowly reduces to a thin film with a large collar. On the nose, aromas of deeply roast grain, chocolate, espresso, burnt toast and molasses. In the mouth, rich, big and bold with the alcohol well hidden. Flavors of roast grain, bitter chocolate, light coffee, toffee, mild plum, a hint of smoke and molasses. Full bodied. Light carbonation. Thick sheets of lacing on the glass. Chewy, round mouthfeel with a hint of creaminess and a noticeable viscosity. The finish is very long with the good roast bitterness riding right to the end.
A superb, big, bold Russian Imperial Stout that is packed with layers of flavor and complexity. One of the best Russian Imperial Stouts I have had in a while. If you like your craft brews dark and deeply roasted this is a must drink brew for you. This will cellar well for years to come. Highly recommended.
