Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project St. Bretta Witbier

  • The St. Bretta Witbier (brewed with Minneola Tangelo - a hybrid of Duncan Grapefruit and Dancy Mandarin Orange) from Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project in Denver, Colorado pours out a yellow-orange straw in color with some cloud and is topped with a two finger, snow white, dense head that slowly reduces down to a film with a slightly larger collar. On the nose, very "wity" with orange and coriander vibrantly showing off. Traces of funk and earth lie underneath the traditional witbier aromas with a hint of spice and wheat. In the mouth, quite crisp with a nice sour note as the flavors play well together. Flavors of orange, tangelo, spice and a tart, sour note from the brett with just a hint of earth. Light bodied. Fine carbonation. Some lacing on the glass. Crisp, clean mouthfeel. The finish is quite long and a little dry with the sour notes outlasting the spice.

A solid craft brew with lovely, restrained flavors that are melded perfectly with a light brett note on the palate. Excellent for a warm spring day and probably perfect for a hot mid-summer afternoon as well. Highly recommended.
