The 2012 Eclipse Imperial Stout - Elijah Craig (20 Year) from FiftyFifty Brewing Company in Truckee, California pours out pitch black in color with no light getting though and is topped with an almost a two finger, dense, mocha colored head that slowly reduces to a film with a good sized collar. On the nose, aromas of bourbon, vanilla, roasted grain, a hint of dark chocolate, honey and coffee. In the mouth, flavors of bourbon, vanilla, molasses, roast grain, chocolate, espresso and a little almost peat like, earthy flavor. Full bodied. Close to solid lacing on the glass. Fine carbonation. Rich, velvety mouthfeel with a good amount of chew. The finish is very long, deeply roasted and laced with bourbon right to the end.
Eclipse is always top notch in my book, year in and year out, and this bottle does not disappoint. Immensely complex with layer upon layer of flavor that tantalizes your palate as if it is having its own party. I can't say enough good about this craft beer. Pricey, but worth it. Like a Palmer or a Margaux it will age for years and become even better. Highly recommended.
