The Double Black Series False Summit Quadrupel Ale Aged In Bourbon Barrels from Elevation Beer Company in Poncha Springs, Colorado pours out a coppery-mahogany brown in color with just a little light getting through on the edges and is topped with a one finger, cream colored, soapy head that reduces all the way down leaving just a small collar. On the nose, aromas of dark fruit, mellow bourbon, toffee and yeast. In the mouth, flavors of bourbon, vanilla, sweet prune, slight cherry tartness, some earth, peppery spice and a Belgian like after taste. Fine carbonation. Fuller side of medium bodied. Little lacing on the glass. Slight syrup to the mouthfeel. The finish is long with the sweet dark fruit riding through to the end.
False Summit is more to style than Elevation's Apis IV was, and Apis IV is a stellar brew, with lovely subdued bourbon flavors imparted in a very good quadrupel ale. Definite finesse in the mouth with good flavors dancing on the palate. The bourbon shows itself but is not overbearing. A solid craft brew from Elevation Beer Co. Now, hopefully, they will make a Bourbon Barrel Aged Apis IV. Recommended.
