This is definitely a pairing-friendly beer, more than a stand-alone taste. Alone, IPA and Imperial traits switch back and forth in sequence, rather than harmony. The first notes are pure Imperial- strong and astringent-yet-syrupy. A fleeting taste of candied orange peel transforms almost instantaneously to a raw, oily, orange zest taste, flavoring both the Imperial and IPA characteristics.
As the beer approaches room temperature, the orange flavor slides more towards a candied or marmalade flavor. IPA fans who are curious about the way their favorite hoppy beer would transform with the heft of an Imperial behind it should definitely seek out this very strong offering from Harpoon.
