Le Freak Ale
Green Flash Brewing Co – San Diego County, CA
Ok, I’m going to get this right this time. This is a cross between a Belgian TRIPPEL and an Imperial Pale Ale. (I messed up my Vertical Epic blog the other day, calling it a Dubbel...what can I say, I was tipsy!)
Anyway, back to the blog at hand. This beer poured out beautifully. A cloudy golden ale with a 1 inch pillowy head. A touch too much sediment in the bottom, but otherwise nice look to it.
Aroma had a definite spiciness to it. Reminded me of the spices I put in my wassail at Christmas time...orange, cinnamon, clove and allspice...a nice scent. Also get a lot of the Belgian yeast character in the smell.
Taste is Belgian upfront with that IPA finish. The spiciness and yeast was immediately present with the citrus, and maybe some more tropical flavors, that complemented the tropical fruit salad I had this with...maybe banana and pineapple. Then the bitter piney hops made themselves present at the end with quite a long finish.
I really liked this ale. I’m a big Imperial Pale Ale fan, so the mix of the spice, yeast and hops works well for me. It might be too bitter for some. But for me it’s just right.
