Heavy Seas The Great'ER Pumpkin
Imperial pumpkin ale aged in bourbon barrels
Clipper City Brewing, Baltimore, MD
22 ounce bottle, 9% ABV
Poured into a snifter, the beer is a very clear (my photo does not do it justice in this regard), deep copper hue with a short-lived ¼” head of off-white or pale beige foam that fades to a collar and thin patch. Aromas of pumpkin pie spices rise from the glass initially, with cinnamon, allspice, and hints of nutmeg and cloves.
Medium pumpkin flavor, with the spicing more restrained than the aroma hinted, followed by bourbon notes. A bit boozy and warming - the effect is almost like someone poured a shot of bourbon into my pumpkin ale! Body is medium, lightened by the brown sugar listed in the ingredients no doubt. As it warms, the bourbon barrel impact becomes more pronounced in both aroma and flavor, with vanilla and oak notes.
Interesting mix of pumpkin, spices, and bourbon notes. The beer continues to evolve from the first sip to the last. Nice twist on the pumpkin ale genre.
