Lagunitas Brewing Co. "A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale"

  • I have been tasting a few really good IPA's lately, which is rather surprising being I was never one that really liked IPA's. But one thing about BEER is that your taste buds are constantly changing and one can acquire tastes for beer, which in the past never would have been consumed. You only have to keep an open mind and keep on sampling and you will eventually find beers in every style that you enjoy.

That being said I tried this beer and was very surprised at its flavor, it was unlike any IPA I had tasted before. Again I only can say a little on this subject as I steered away for the most part from IPA's until just recently. But this beer was very tasty and even though it was nice and hoppy I found myself craving another.

Well anyway here is my review and I hope that if you are on the fringe of maybe trying something different and out of the box you go for it as I did, you may be pleasantly surprised...

Lagunita’s Brewing Company - Petaluma, California USA

    India Pale Ale (ABV 7.3%)

[Best served in a Tulip glass]

    Rating: 3.9/5.0

    Aroma: 8/10

    Appearance: 3/5

    Taste: 8/10

    Palate: 4/5

    Overall: 16/20

It poured a nice light to medium yellow with a slight orange hue and had an average sized (1-2 finger) white rocky head that lasted only a short while leaving behind some nice spotty residue that pretty much lasted throughout thus producing some good sticky lacing.

The aroma was a tad sweet and rather hoppy with a mix of floral and citrus hops, a nice sweet grain malt and an earthy yeast with definite notes of citrus (grapefruit and tangerine) and maybe a little peach.

Now the taste was unique and had a mild malty sweetness to it with a nice touch of bitterness and a strong hint of fruit initially, and pretty much had the same flavor characteristics throughout with a slightly stronger citrus hoppy presence at the end. The flavor stuck around for a decent amount of time leaving behind a nice hoppy aftertaste which lasted well after the swallow.

The mouthfeel was just a bit beyond light in body and had a mild dry yet syrupy texture with a nice soft relaxing carbonation.

Overall an IPA that is just a little sweeter than the norm, which was rather appealing and possessed a nice fruitiness yet still ended with the hoppiness that you get from a really good IPA.
