Oktoberfest Beer Tasting Sept 16th - 30th

From the 16th through the 30th we will be tasting Oktoberfest beers. They can be domestic or imported, whichever you prefer, as long as they are Oktoberfest beers. From Marzen, Spaten, Brooklyn to Becks and everywhere in between you should be able to find a few of these to try and we'd love to hear what you have to say about the Oktoberfest beer you try. -
Samuel Adams Octoberfest, Boston Beer Company, Boston, Massachusetts, 5.70% ABV
The Samuel Adams Octoberfest from Boston Beer Company in Boston, Massachusetts pours out a rich copper in color with good clarity and a thin, light tan head. On the nose aromas of toast, warm spice, caramel sweetness and faint hops. In the mouth this has a lot of caramel malt but is not overly sweet. Warm spice tingles the tongue as do a touch of hoppy bitterness. Medium bodied. Nice carbonation. Decent lacing. Slight creaminess to the mouthfeel. Good malt through an extended finish. I expected this to be good as Sam Adams makes good beers but it exceeded my expectations. Pick up some and try it.

Hoptober Golden Ale, New Belgium Brewing, Fort Collins, CO, 6.00% ABV
Not really an Octoberfest beer but it is a seasonal for October (I assume). Hoptober from New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins, Colorado pours out a deep gold in color with good clarity and just over a finger of white head that sticks around a bit. The nose has lovely floral and citrus hops with a little caramel in the back. The citrus hop are quite pronounced in the taste but with enough malt sweetness that this is not overly hoppy and almost to the point where the maltiness is more strident. Light side of medium bodied. Good lacing. Nice carbonation. Slick mouthfeel. The sweetness asserts itself on the finish more than the hop. A very balanced, enjoyable golden ale that is a treat to drink.

Widmer Brothers Portland Oregan makers of a great hefeweizen, Drifter pale ale and some of the best root beers, adds a octoberfest style to the list. Okto munich style ale is full bodied with a inch of foam that sticks around tastes of orangepeels malts, ginger coriander, barley and a bread pumpernickel to be exact. a very good Mar-zen a strong competitor with all the great Oktoberfest style beers! -

Oktoberfest Ur-Marzen, Spaten-Franziskaner-Brau, Munich, Germany, 5.90% ABV
The Oktoberfest Ur-Marzen from Spaten-Franziskaner-Brau in Munich, Germany pours out a brownish copper in color with good clarity and a one finger, dense, off-white head that sticks around. On the nose aromas of lightly roasted grains, mild spicy hops and a little dark fruit. In the mouth flavors of dark dried fruit that are slightly sweet, husky grain, roasted malt and a drying, spicy hop flavor. Light side of medium bodied. Decent lacing. Moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is somewhat slippery. The finish is fairly short and had a little more sweetness towards the end.

Sprecher Oktoberfest, pours a nice copper-brown, minor head that stays around for a long time, a little light on the malt tones, overall well balanced. Easy to drink several if you have the notion.

Victory Festbier, Victory Brewing Company, Downington, PA, 5.60% ABV
The Festbier From Victory Brewing Company in Downington, Pennsylvania pours out an orangish amber in color with a little haze and a one finger light tan head. On the nose aromas of bread dough, caramel, grassy hops and just a hint of alcohol. in the mouth there is a ton of toasty malt with some hop bite hiding in their trying to balance out the malt. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Some lacing. Almost chewy mouthfeel. Nice, malty finish that is quite long spiked with a mild hop twang.

Gordon Biersch FestBier, Gordon Biersch Brewing Co., San Jose, CA
The Gordon Biersch FestBier from Gordon Biersch Brewing Company in San Jose, California pours out a rich orange-copper in color with nice clarity and a dense off-white head that sticks around for a while. On the nose aromas of toasted, sweet malt, grassy and slight citrus hop. In the mouth the malt is at the forefront with flavors of biscuit and caramel with the hops coming in towards the end. Light side of medium bodied. Good carbonation. Nice lacing. Smooth almost slick mouthfeel. Moderate length finish that while malty, does show off some hoppiness. A lighter Octoberfest style beer that is very drinkable.
