My most memorable "Homebrew Disaster" would have to be during the fermentation of the "Komrad Kommies Vanilla Russian Imperial Stout" I Don't know what I was thinking on brew day but when it was time to transfer wort to the primary (like the genius that I am) I did not filter out all the vanilla beans and other crap I added to the boil. Oh wait, May I not forget to mention that the stars and planets aligned just right for this next outrageously dumb move...For another idiotic reason it must of been in the back of my head that the yeast wasn't going to be strong enough or possibly there wasn't going to be enough in the wort for the yeast to consume...so what did I do...I added nutrient...is that all? NO WAY....and...ENERGIZER!. Two days later (Saturday) I was called into work for mold deconstruction leaving my friend to watch my son until his mother got home. Before I departed I (naturally) checked out my fermenting beer and noticed the top was starting to bulge out. Too afraid to pop the top to relieve some pressure I just replaced the gunky airlock and left for work...Not even 1/2 hour later I get the call..."Dude something F#$%'n exploded in the basement i felt it through the floor" OMG!!! The fermenter built so much pressure it shot the lid straight into my basement ceiling. I had him McGuyver a blow off tube via airlock and tubing into a sanitized bucket it relieved the issue for a bit. But then...ring, Ring,...Another phone call. Another Explosion. I was able to save about 3 out of 5 gallons of that brew...and it came out great. Happy ending! Moral of the story..DON'T USE YEAST ENERGIZER + YEAST NUTRIENT IN HIGHLY FERMENTABLE HIGH ABV BEERS!!! They will be fine on their own. :p
