I would also suggest reading a great deal, starting either with Charlie Papazian's "Joy of Homebrewing" which is nice, but not as detailed as John Palmer's "How to Brew" which is actually what I prefer.
I would also suggest that you find some people who are already doing this in your community. I would suggest you make sure they are making good beer, first though. Wouldn't want the Blind Leading the Blind.
Get at least a 9-gallon kettle and a turkey fryer or turkey fryer burner, at least, so you can boil it outside. Boiling beer will stink up your house. This may not be an issue to you.
