dry hopping

  My first dry hop & I notice that after 11/2 weeks I still have floaters on top. I used Cascade pellets and am wondering if they should settle, or do I go ahead and bottle , if so how will that effect my clarity? -md

  Have you tried swirling the beer inside the fermenter? Last time I dry-hopped, I had a similar situation, and this helped. It didn't drop 100% of the hop stuff out for me, but took care of most of it. You'll need to give it time for things to settle out afterward, of course.

  Yeah, I tried dry-hopping an IPA once and had the same issue. I just used a stainless steel strainer when I racked it to secondary to filter most of it out. I was kind of disappointed with the results. I wanted more flavor and aroma and all I got was a lot of bitter.

  First problem; don't use pellet hops to dry hop. Use whole hops and place them in a hop sock. When I dry hop I'll do that and then weight to sock down with marbles or stainless washers. Use a clean hop sock or prior to, clean the sock in a light bleach and rinse well. you'll be happier with the results.

  hopdog09 - good suggestion. I've used that method before, and will go back to doing that next time I dry hop. Make sure you sanitize your weights, too.

  Only Dry Hop for 5-7 days to avoid that "vegatative" flavor. When I dry hop, it's usually the last 5 days of the 10-day secondary fermentation period.
