Let's find some IPA from East of the Mississippi, and give it a try. We need to spread the hoppy wealth around! Enjoy!

Shipyard Brewing Company IPA 5.80% ABV
Shipyard Brewing Company, Portland ME

Pours out a nice amber in color with minimal cloud and a lovely off white head. The nose is complete with grapefruit, floral tones and bubble gum. In the mouth you first taste a very tight bitterness followed by grains, earth, some citrus and slight sweetness. Low carbonation. Nice lacing on the glass. Medium to light bodied. Creamy mouthfeel but very dry. The finish is full of citrus and hoppy bitterness as well as being very dry. I really liked this IPA. Very easy drinker.

Name - Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA
Country - United States
Type - IPA

Appearance - Light amber color with nice sized white head.

Smell - A slightly hoppy smell with a hint of citrus.

Taste - A hoppy taste of grains but finishes smooth with a good after taste.

In the world of American IPAs this one ranks among the best. Dogfish Head is acclaimed for a lot of their brews. Some of which I have enjoyed and some I have not. Their IPA though is definitely among those that I enjoy. Possibly the best IPA I have had yet.

Overall Grade - A-

Name - Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA
Country - United States
Type - American IPA

Appearance - A clear amber color but the head was very minimal on both bottles that I poured.

Smell - Mildly hoppy smell.

Taste - It has a floral hoppyness to it with some slightly sweet malts. I would say caramel tasting with them.

I love the Flying Dog names and label designs. They are just odd to say the least. Plus an endorsement from the late Hunter S. Thompson doesn’t hurt either. This was a very smooth IPA, not bitter in the slightest. While I didn’t see much that made it one of the best IPAs it is a very solid one as there really wasn’t anything wrong with it other than I would say the lack of a head. I would definitely have this one again.

Overall Grade - B-

Name: Clipper City Loose Cannon IPA Nice amber color, with strong aroma of hops. A smooth, bitter and flowery taste. Very nice IPA. Not one for too many Clipper City brews, but this is a quality brew.

Dogfish Head - Milton DE
90 Minute Imperial IPA
9.0% ABV

This DIPA was a nice start to our Eastern US IPA tasting:

A: Poured a syrupy orange amber color, thin head, but left good lacing

S: I got the citrus honey malt scent predominantly

T: Very honey-like with a little piney hop finish, only slightly bitter

M: Medium carbonation, mellowing with time in the glass, medium bodied, nice

D: Just a little kick from the 9.0% ABV, quite a well balanced drinkable beer

Erie Brewing Company
Misery Bay IPA
Erie, PA

A: Pours a clean yellow/ orange-ish color, with a light tan head.

S:In the aroma, hoppy, very pilsner like, and a sweet malt.

T: Hoppy, yet again, very pilsner like, a slight malty presence. A dry bitterness

M: Lighter bodied mouthfeel, and a dry, hoppy, small bitterness in the aftertaste.

Kind of light for an IPA, and again very pilsner like, not a great beer overall for me. Just seemed to be missing the mark

OK, disclaimer. I dislike hoppy beers. A lot. I like malty beers, ales and gruit ales. So I almost skipped this tasting because IPAs are known for being hops-fests.

But what the hell, right?

So I got some Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.

I have to say, that I have not had a bad beer from this brewery yet. And this is no exception.

It is hoppy, piney in taste, mixed with a nice malty balance. Very balanced, in fact. I really like this beer, which is saying a lot, because I almost always dislike IPAs.

I agree with oregonbeerlover's grade of B+. It is a nice solid beer, but I would not go wild over it. But, I sense my reasoning is very different, as I am not a hops fan at all.

For East Coast Brews you all should try some RJ Rockers(we are in Spartanburg SC) - We brew ales - I would suggest trying either the Bald Eagle Brown OR if you want to go for a more interesting high gravity try out the Bell Ringer! I love them both - the Bell Ringer is slightly more potent but still delicious! (we are in Virginia and Washington DC.....check out the website for actual places sold... www.rjrockers.com)

Unearthly Imperial IPA 11.00% ABV
Southern Tier Brewing Company, Lakewood, NY

The Unearthly Imperial India Pale Ale (IPA) pours out a bright copper in color with perfect clarity and a big frothy, white head that hangs on for a long time. Big citrus and pine hop aromas on the nose with some malty sweetness and earthy tones. In the mouth you are first thrilled by the syrupy, caramel sweetness that is followed by a hop bite. There must be a ton off malt in here to offset the hops. Medium bodied. Lovely lacing. Fairly mellow carbonation in the mouth. Rich, full mouthfeel. Amazing that at 11% ABV there is no heat whatsoever. The malt and hops go on forever in a long finish. A very nice Imperial IPA. Well worth trying.
