Snow stopped. Sun came out. Turned into a nice but chilly day. Drinking an Odell's Red Ale to finish off the day.

He urged me to drink it right away because he thought this beer might be towards the end of its fresh IPA life. When poured, this brew was a hazy red/orange with minimal head and minimal lacing. The smell was a 50/50 balance of a mild citrus hop, and a sweet sugar malt.

  • Beervana: Hops Are Not a Problem
Yesterday Portlander Adrienne So penned a provocative piece in Slate called Against Hoppy Beer. It created a predictable amount of hubbub on the intertubes and didn't seem to warrant a post from me, so I Facebooked it, whereupon a debate broke out. The issue is nicely summed up by a slugline to the Slate piece is "the craft beer industry’s love affair with hops is alienating people who don’t like bitter brews." Well, is it?
  • Why the End of 'Craft' Beer Is Just a Tax Break Away
Garret Oliver has been brewmaster at The Brooklyn Brewery since 1994. He was the brewmaster at Manhattan Brewing before that and has served as editor-in-chief of The Oxford Companion to Beer, written two other books on beer and continues to make a series of brews that gets all the beer geeks excited. At some point this year, a person who claims to love beer is going to say that Oliver isn't a craft brewer because of a stance his company took on excise taxes. If that happens in your presence, pull the beer out of that person's hand and pour it over his or her swollen head. They don't deserve it.
